Belkin recalls wireless charger sold by Apple because of fire, shock risks

Belkin is recalling an iPhone wireless charging stand that was sold in Apple Stores and on Apple's website because of fire and shock hazards.

The recall applies to Portable Wireless Charger + Stand Special Edition (WIZ003) models sold between July 2020 and October 2020, according to a Consumer Product Safety Commission advisory. Belkin is voluntarily recalling the product.

According to Belkin, a manufacturing defect in the device's power supply could cause it to overheat and increase the risk of catching fire or shocking users. The company advises anyone who owns the product to stop using it and to unplug it from its power source immediately. Belkin added that it would refund users who bought the charger.

As of writing, no injuries or damage has been reported from the safety hazard. The recall does not affect any other wireless charger sold by Belkin or Apple.

The Portable Wireless Charger + Stand Special Edition is an $80 charging stand that was sold on Apple's website and at its brick-and-mortar retail locations, as well as through Belkin's online storefront. It features 10W charging speeds for compatible devices and a removable 10,000mAh battery pack.

Users who purchased the wireless charger can request a refund at this link.

How do they determine it's a hazard product if no such incident has been reported? Didn't they do quality assurance before it shipped out?

Mass production manufacturing defects don’t necessarily show up in prototype testing especially since it’s not a design flaw. So their ongoing quality control picked it up on full production run units.
