Apple has announced Final Cut Camera 2.0, its free camera app for use with video editor Final Cut Pro, bringing with it a series of improvements to take advantage of the iPhone 17 range's new features.

Aside from a trivial update to add Image Playground in March 2025, Apple's camera app for multicam video users hasn't seen a significant improvement since its launch in July 2024. Now, however, Apple has announced version 2.0 with a range of improvements for both professional and consumer users.

"Final Cut Camera 2.0 [introduces] game-changing support for ProRes RAW and genlock on the all-new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max," said Apple in a statement. "The update also adds intuitive new manual adjustments for the Center Stage front camera available on the new iPhone family for complete creative control, as well as seamless integration with Live Multicam in Final Cut Pro for iPad."

Apple claims that this update will give editors the ability to reframe shots, because it introduces open gate recording. This uses the full camera sensor, capturing a wider field of view and doing so at more than 4K.

For multicam shoots using the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the new Final Cut Camera 2.0 also supports genlock. This ability to sync footage across multiple devices is currently available using a new Blackmagic Design Camera ProDoc.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 also enables timecoding, plus up to 4K at 60 frames per second using the new 200mm Telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple says that the updated app will be available later in September. The company has also revealed that Final Cut Pro 11.2 is coming for the Mac, and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3 for iPadOS, although no release date was given.

This marks the first update to the Mac and iPad versions of Final Cut Pro since March 2025.
