German musician Cro claims Apple has a secret deal to blur his face in photos without his mask. The rapper claiming that Apple has this so-called privacy feature for celebs is pure theater.

In an October 2025 YouTube Short posted by GQ Germany, Cro explains that he's rarely recognized in public. When it happens, he says he's happy, but he insists photos of him without the mask simply don't work.

"I made a deal with Apple," he says in the video. "If anyone tries to take a photo of me without the mask, it automatically blacks out. You don't see anything."

The claim is charitably nonsense.

The mask as a brand

Cro, whose real name is Carlo Waibel, has worn a panda-style mask since his early career in the 2010s. It became his trademark and helped him stand apart in the German hip-hop scene.

The mask also gave him the privacy that most artists lose once they break through. His talk of an Apple deal is almost certainly a joke. There is not a single feature that Apple has that does this.

If there was, the more affluent celebrities from Hollywood or politicians looking to avoid scandal would certainly have identified how to get it, and paid buckets of money for it.

Cro is likely leaning into the mystery that made him famous, and fans know to expect a mix of fact and fiction in his public persona. Face-blurring technology exists, but it comes from consumer apps and editing software.

Apple has built its reputation on privacy, often highlighting features like Face ID, app tracking limits, and on-device data processing in its marketing. That makes it the perfect company for Cro to invoke when spinning a story about his identity staying hidden.

By claiming Apple as his silent partner, Cro taps into a brand instantly associated with secrecy and control. The joke works because people already see Apple as a gatekeeper of personal data, even though the reality in this case is pure performance.

Good for him for wanting to stay private. Faking a deal with Apple doesn't help.
