Kensington's new Thunderbolt 5 docks give Apple Silicon users a way to tap Thunderbolt 5's full bandwidth.
Thunderbolt 5 doubles the baseline bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4 and reaches 80 Gbps under normal operation. It also supports a higher peak mode that helps with video-heavy workloads.
Apple and Intel launched Thunderbolt 5 for fast storage and high-resolution displays. Kensington is among the first major accessory makers to release docks using the full spec.
The SD7100T5 EQ Pro Dock and its Mac-focused EQ Pro variant follow the standard closely. They support demanding displays, fast external media, and a broad range of peripherals while keeping plenty of charging power on the table.
The feature list goes beyond expansion and the docks are built for people who want a compact workstation on a desk.
Which Macs support Thunderbolt 5
Only a few Macs support Thunderbolt 5 speeds. Apple added the ports to newer Mac models with M4 and M4 Pro chips.
Older Macs with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports can use Thunderbolt 5 accessories. However, the docks will only match the speed of the host Mac. A Thunderbolt 5 dock won't have full bandwidth on Macs with an M3 chip or earlier.
Kensington's docks can drive up to two 6K displays on Apple Silicon Pro and Max models. That capability depends on the host hardware, so users will only see the benefit if their Mac includes Thunderbolt 5 ports.
What Kensington Built for Thunderbolt 5
The docks deliver 140 watts of charging power, which keeps a modern MacBook Pro charged under load. Kensington says its KonstantCharge system continues powering connected devices even when the host laptop isn't docked.
The port layout is where the two docks start to pull ahead of typical Thunderbolt accessories. Kensington built them for people who move large files, juggle several displays, and rely on fast external gear without wanting a tangle of adapters.
- Four Thunderbolt 5 ports
- Four USB-A ports
- Two USB-C ports
- Three card readers
- 2.5 Gbps Ethernet
- Audio inputs and outputs
- PCIe M.2 SSD slot for internal storage
The result is a layout that supports heavy workloads while keeping everything on a single cable.
Features beyond ports
Two programmable hardware buttons sit on the docks for workflow shortcuts. Windows users can map them to commands or apps through Kensington's Konnect software.
Mac users can set them to trigger common tasks like Focus mode or quick photo backups from an iPhone.
Kensington's docks can mount under a desk with an optional zero-footprint bracket and features a recycled aluminum housing in FSC-certified packaging. They come with a three-year warranty and access to the DockWorks software suite.
Availability
Kensington's SD7100T5 EQ Pro Dock and EQ Pro Dock for MacBook are available through the company's online store and partner retailers.
Both models include a three-year limited warranty.
