Apple's engineers are going to attend a to multi-week AI vibecoding bootcamp, which in theory will help improve Siri.
Apple's planned contextual awareness upgrade for Siri still isn't here, nearly two years after it was announced at WWDC 2024. Development has hit some snags, and it's often been said that Apple has fallen behind in the AI race.
However, the company remains undeterred.
According to The Information, just under 200 engineers working on Siri will be sent to a so-called "coding bootcamp." Here, they will learn to code using AI-based utilities over several weeks.
This will reportedly leave 60 employees as the core Siri development team, while an additional 60 engineers will be tasked with evaluating the virtual assistant's performance.
The move is said to be a reaction to the ever-changing programming landscape, which has been influenced by coding assistants like OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code. Xcode 26.3 added support for agentic coding utilities, so it makes sense for Apple to pursue something like this internally.
Wednesday's report also claims that AI coding tools have taken off within certain departments at Apple, leading to large budget allocations for Claude Code, among other utilities. Agentic coding software reportedly helps Apple's employees produce more code than before as well.
The road to a better Siri
The alleged AI coding bootcamp isn't the only change Apple has made after the delay of its promised Siri upgrade. Instead of John Giannandrea, Apple's former head of AI, the Siri team is currently under the control of Mike Rockwell, known for his role in the Apple Vision Pro launch.
The underlying Apple Intelligence models will receive an upgrade as well, thanks to Google Gemini's involvement. Unless further delays occur, the revamped Siri will allegedly be able to complete multi-step commands while also offering a chatbot-style experience.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the AI-infused Siri will perform compared to the likes of ChatGPT and Claude. Apple is expected to deliver its long-overdue Siri upgrade at WWDC 2026, which starts on June 8.
