Apple's strategy for iPhone 20 depends a lot on what happens in 2027. Either Apple could release the iPhone 19 as expected, or it could skip to iPhone 20 as a twentieth anniversary device similar to iPhone X.
Then there's the chance Apple could mix things up further by releasing both an iPhone 19 (base model) and iPhone XX (Pro model). Rumors also suggest 2026 could be the year we see an iPhone Fold emerge.
There's also the distinct chance that Apple upends its naming shceme entirely. The name "iPhone 19" or "iPhone 20" both sound a bit unweildy versus just "iPhone."
Of course, Apple is also known for ignoring its history and anniversaries beyond a simple nod on its website. There is a lot of time between now and the fall of 2027, but rumors persist, so here's what we know about the twentieth-anniversary iPhone so far.
iPhone 20: Apple's twentieth anniversary edition
Naming is tough to nail down ahead of announcements, so we'll be referring to the 2027 iPhone as the iPhone 20 in this page. Keep an eye out for updates, as rumors could shift things around greatly in the coming years.
Rumors suggest that Apple could increase the amount of glass used in the iPhone 20, but it isn't clear exactly what this means given the iPhone 17 Pro Max design. The frame of the iPhone 17 Pro models is aluminum with a glass cutout where the MagSafe magnets are located.
Presumably, the display could wrap further around the edges and eliminate the bezel entirely, but a frame around the edges and the camera plateau would still be needed for structural reasons. Some had speculated about a more dramatic change, like an all-glass design, but that seems unlikely due to pro models tending to be advertised for their durability.
Others suggested that the Liquid Glass design introduced in iOS 26 could hint at more AR interfaces coming to a more glass phone. This would mean having a transparent UI that attempts to make the device disappear into the user's environment.
However, developer's attempts to create transparent UI that relies on the external cameras to paint backgrounds with iPhone 16 result in ugly, battery exhaustive results. Apple will likely stick to its traditional OS styling going forward, though Liquid Glass is expected to see gradual refinements.
The front glass of the iPhone 20 could get a big update as well. The glass could be perfectly flat with no cutouts, not even for the selfie camera.
Rumors show the iPhone 18 Pro that will be announced in 2026 could already ditch the cutout for Face ID components. However, it could take time to get the selfie camera below glass.
If Apple can perfect the technology by 2027 such that the selfie camera can be placed below the glass without ruining the image quality, then the all-glass iPhone without cutouts is a possibility.
There are also limited rumors about the iPhone 20's performance. The A20 processor would get Unified Memory, similar to M-series chips, which would greatly benefit Apple Intelligence processing.
iPhone 20 could be a 2028 product
If Apple instead releases an iPhone 19 in 2027, then the iPhone 20 will release in 2028. There are no rumors about the 2028 device at this time.
