Apogee & Sennheiser's Ambeo headset captures 3D audio with Lightning, launches at Apple stores

Apogee and Sennheiser's Ambeo Smart Headset features both a "high fidelity" listening experience, but also the ability to capture directional audio while recording a video — and it is now available through Apple Retail in an exclusive black version.

The Ambeo Smart Headset will capture audio from within the Camera app with the companies claiming that it will "pick up the sound just like your ears would." The resultant video with binaural audio can be played back on any stereo headphones.

The product website has a series of videos it claims that audio for the recording was captured by the Ambeo Smart Headset.

Using the rocker switch, users can either make the outside noise fade into whatever is being played through the earpieces, or can enable active noise cancellation, blocking out the acoustic environment. The feature, called "Situational Awareness" also functions when recording or making a call.

The ear-mounted microphones are not used for making a call. The headset includes an additional built-in microphone for calls or Siri use.

The frequency response in the headphones are between 15 and 22,000 Hz. Maximum sound pressure level is 112dB.

The headset requires iOS 10.3.3 or later to use. The company claims compatibility with the iPhone 5 and newer, the iPad fourth generation and newer, and the sixth generation iPod touch.

The Ambeo Smart headset is now available at Apple Retail in white or black or from Amazon for $299.95 for the white version.

Does anybody know if AirPods record using both microphones as well ? Seems like a no-brainer to record great stereo sound if the microphones are up to the task, the software shouldn't be too much hassle.
