Apple invites WWDC 2016 scholarship winners to June 12 orientation

People who won a scholarship to attend Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June are now being invited to attend a special orientation session on the Sunday before the conference, June 12.

The orientation begins at 11 a.m. Pacific time, and will run until 5 p.m., Apple said in a message sent to scholarship holders. On top of help navigating WWDC, the company is promising a chance to meet other winners and "hear insights from Apple engineers."

This year's WWDC is scheduled for June 13 through 17 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Apple has awarded 350 scholarships in total to various students and members of STEM organizations. Of those, 125 are getting special assistance to deal with the costs of traveling to the event.

Winning a scholarship required applicants to submit an essay plus an app they worked on that made "creative use of Apple technologies," whether it was personal, a school project, or something published to the App Store.

As usual, WWDC should kick off with a keynote presentation from Apple. The company will presumably show off the next versions of iOS and OS X, but some rumored announcements include an Apple Music revamp and new Coach bands for the Apple Watch.
