Apple TV YouTube app gets big update to fix bugs & offer NFL Sunday Ticket

YouTube app on Apple TV gets update

YouTube is releasing an update for its YouTube TV app on Apple TV that fixes a syncing bug, sets the stage for improved picture quality, and more.

A YouTube team member shared the details on Reddit and said the version 1.13 update would be a significant one. The update fixes issues with the app opening to a black screen, enables YouTube TV's HDR implementation, and addresses some 4k playback issues.

First, the update fixes an issue some people noticed where the app crashed on the first-generation Apple TV 4K when it was left on. Next, if users see a black screen temporarily when switching between content, that can be fixed.

The problem is due to the Apple TV's transitioning between SDR and HDR content. Users can fix it by setting SDR by default or disabling range matching.

  • Setting SDR as Default: Settings > Video and Audio > Format > (Pick any SDR option)
  • Disabling Range Matching: Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content > Match Dynamic Range > Off

Next, the YouTube team believes they have a fix for audio/visual syncing issues and will test it soon. They're also testing changes to transcoding, including a bitrate increase for live 1080p content.

YouTube has also been experimenting with the multiview feature that lets users see up to four live streams simultaneously on one screen. All subscribers have access to the feature for sporting events such as March Madness, and the team is working on improvements ahead of the NFL season.

Finally, users can sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket through the Memberships page in YouTube TV settings or the Movies & TV section. YouTube TV is available in the App Store for devices running tvOS 13 or later.
