Skylum adding trio of AI-powered photo editing features to Luminar Neo

Luminar Neo's GenErase feature

Last updated

Luminar Neo is set to gain three generative AI-backed editing tools that will begin rolling out later this October.

Skylum's Luminar Neo platform has launched GenErase, GenExpand, and GenSwap, their first generative AI technologies. These AI-driven tools offer efficient solutions for photographers to eliminate unwanted objects, expand the canvas, or insert and modify specific photo elements.

GenErase is the next-generation Erase tool that not only removes unwanted distractions from images but also intelligently replaces those areas using content-aware AI tools. GenErase creates a focused and distraction-free composition by preserving the integrity of photos.

The tool fills in the gaps with textures and other elements using AI that match the surrounding area. For example, it can seamlessly remove objects such as trash, street signs, utility poles, vehicles, graffiti, crowds, and more to preserve the beauty of the composition.

GenExpand is an advanced tool that enables users to overcome traditional aspect ratios' limitations and add a new dimension to their original compositions. With GenExpand, photos can easily extend their boundaries to create panoramic landscapes of vast mountain ranges, serene lakes, and more.

Additionally, favorite images can be given more space to stand out against a well-balanced background.

GenSwap allows photographers to alter the composition of their images by replacing or swapping objects. It can also add new elements generated by AI in response to the user's prompt, enhancing images and making them more captivating. For instance, you can replace an unsightly tree with a more attractive one, add a bird to the sky, or insert a rock in a desert landscape to complete the photo.

The release of these tools will occur sequentially throughout October, November, and December, commencing with GenErase on October 26, 2023.

Pro, Explore, and Ultimate plan subscribers can access platform upgrades and generative technologies for monthly, annual, and 2-year subscription periods. New users can take advantage of special prices ranging from $14.95 to $269 until October 28, 2023.

Existing Luminar Neo lifetime (perpetual) license owners can switch to the Pro annual subscription at a special price: $69 for the first year until October 28, 2023.

They can purchase the 2023/24 Creative Journey Pass for $69, on sale until October 28, 2023. This pass will grant access to generative technologies until August 16, 2024, and all new features announced and released before that date (Extensions excluded).

Luminar Neo requires just about any Mac made in the last 12 years to run, and 8GB of RAM at a minimum. There is also a Windows version.

There's a boo-boo by the AI in the 'After' example. Lower right: it wasn't "intelligent" enough to keep the dashed street lines consistent and instead creates one line that's significantly longer than the others.
