Cerence AI, a company that creates conversational AI for automakers, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple.

This isn't the first time Apple was sued over voice recognition for technology like Siri. In this lawsuit, Cerence alleges Apple infringed on patents related to voice command recognition, as well as text input and recognition.

However, it's unclear which Cerence patents and Apple features are central to the lawsuit. The patent infringement lawsuit could have to do with Apple's voice assistant, Siri, its Apple Intelligence features, or possibly CarPlay.

It's similarly difficult to ascertain how credible Cerence's patent infringement claims are. The company has not publicly revealed any information beyond the existence of a lawsuit.

Cerence claims it has "a portfolio of patents developed over decades of research and development." The company also says its clients are leading automotive brands and technology companies, among others. Cerence explained that the goal of its lawsuit against Apple is to protect investments, innovations, customers, and technical leadership.

The lawsuit was announced via a press release on the Cerence website. It contains no details about potential remedies or the damages Cerence is requesting. The lawsuit itself, meanwhile, was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas.

The iPhone maker has been involved in patent disputes in the past, notably concerning the Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor. In that instance, however, the company suing Apple revealed information about the patents and inventions it claimed were infringed upon.

Overall, it seems unlikely Cerence will win a lawsuit against Apple, though it will be difficult to determine the validity of the lawsuit without knowing which patented technology is key to the dispute. Expect Apple to respond and a lengthy court battle to follow.
