Apple is betting on a sharper screen, faster chip, and quicker charging to convince users the iPhone 17 is more than a minor refresh.

The company unveiled the iPhone 17 during its "Awe Dropping" event in Cupertino on September 9, 2025. The new base model will ship with iOS 26 and hit stores on September 19 after preorders open September 12. Pricing starts at $799 with 256GB of storage, with a 512GB option also available.

At first glance, it looks familiar. Under the hood, it finally brings some long-requested upgrades. For years, Apple has treated the standard iPhone like the middle child.

It got the hand-me-down chips from Pro models, the slower displays, and the occasional color refresh. Customers who didn't care about zoom lenses or titanium frames often ended up with a device that felt second-tier.

The iPhone 17 attempts to change that perception.

Performance gains with the A19 chip

The base model jumps to the A19 processor, previously reserved for Pro devices. Built on a third-generation 3nm process, it powers Apple Intelligence, advanced photographic styles, and delivers up to 30 hours of video playback — eight more than the iPhone 16. Charging also improves, with 50% reached in 20 minutes using Apple's new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter.

Real-world testing will be more important than Apple's staged demos. However, the company consistently delivers strong single-core performance each year.

Memory remains at 8 GB, which trails the 12 GB now standard on the iPhone 17 Pro. That may not matter to casual users, but heavier multitaskers will notice the ceiling sooner.

Finally, a 120Hz display

The headline feature is the new 6.3-inch OLED screen with ProMotion up to 120Hz. Apple introduced ProMotion on the iPhone 13 Pro back in 2021.

It took four years for the technology to trickle down to the standard model. Scrolling should now look smoother, animations will feel snappier, and gaming may benefit as well.

Apple also pushed brightness to 3000 nits outdoors — the highest ever on iPhone — and added thinner bezels with a contoured edge design. A new Ceramic Shield 2 coating provides 3x better scratch resistance and reduced glare.

Selfie camera gets serious

Apple introduces a new 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera with a square sensor, the first time for iPhone. It supports portrait and landscape selfies without rotating the device, uses AI to expand the field of view for group shots, and enables ultra-stabilized 4K HDR video. Users can even record front and back simultaneously with Dual Capture.

On the rear, both the main and ultra-wide sensors are now 48MP, with the ultra-wide offering up to 4x more detail than before. Computational tools like next-generation Photographic Styles and Dolby Vision recording round out the system.

Software upgrades with iOS 26

The iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, which introduces a new "Liquid Glass" design. It also adds call screening, live translation, and a redesigned Apple Games app.

These features will trickle down to older devices, but Apple tends to optimize the newest version for its latest hardware. The N1 networking chip enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while eSIM expands to more countries with an eSIM-only model.

Environment and accessories

Apple says the iPhone 17 uses 30% recycled materials, including 85% recycled aluminum in the frame and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. Packaging is fully fiber-based.

Accessories include new MagSafe cases, a $59 crossbody strap made from recycled yarn, and a $39 Qi2 MagSafe charger. Customers can also get three free months of Apple Arcade, Fitness+, Music, News+, and TV+ with a new device.

Pricing and availability

The iPhone 17 starts at $799 in the U.S. or $33.29 per month with financing. Apple doubled the entry storage this year, so the base configuration includes 256GB, with a 512GB option available. Color choices are black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white.

Preorders begin Friday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PDT, with general availability on Friday, September 19 in more than 63 countries, including the U.S., UK, Canada, China, and Japan. Another 22 regions will follow on September 26.

Apple is also offering trade-in deals worth $200 to $700 for customers upgrading from an iPhone 13 or newer, with carrier promotions reaching as high as $1,100 in credits when applying toward an iPhone 17 Pro.
