An small number of iPhone 17 owners have taken to Apple's support forums asking for help over their Wi-Fi connection dropping intermittently.

It's always possible to have Wi-Fi issues on the iPhone and there are ways to troubleshoot them. But these particular reports are specific to the new iPhone 17 family of devices, and then to an unknown but seemingly small number of users.

There have also been mixed and at times confusing reports over precisely what happens. But one common thread is that Wi-Fi — and sometimes Bluetooth — drop when an iPhone 17 is either locked or unlocked.

Some users reporting this say that the connection then resets after a few seconds.

"It's like the chips that control WiFi and Bluetooth get reset every time you wake the phone," writes one user on Reddit.

That user notes that this all makes AirPlay unusable. Others are saying that it means wireless CarPlay can't work either.

Apple Watch may be part of the problem

As well as locking and unlocking the iPhone, multiple users claim that the issue comes only when they are wearing an Apple Watch.

Specifically, that if they are wearing the Watch — and it's unlocked — then they have the problem. Lock the Apple Watch or take it off, and they don't.

There doesn't seem to be one specific Apple Watch model that is causing the problem. As spotted first by MacRumors, most reports concern the iPhone 17, but there are some for the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

So far Apple has not commented publicly. A number of users claim to have reported the issue and been told it's being escalated to Apple's engineers.

Since the issue does not appear to be affecting every single CarPlay user with an iPhone 17 and an Apple Watch, it's unlikely to be a hardware issue. Consequently it will hopefully be addressed in software update, just as Apple released a quick iOS 26 update just before the iPhone 17 was shipping.
