On the latest episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, we cover the news from the week, including discussion of all the announcements from the headline-grabbing Google and Amazon smart home events.
Blink had a temporary outage, leaving cameras unreachable for users. Amazon has since resolved the issue, but it highlights the benefits of locally accessible video streams.
Tile is also having a bit of a security nightmare as researchers show how any tracker from the company can be watched by a stalker, or Tile owner Life360. The flaw arises from the device's MAC address being transmitted unencrypted associated with the user's ID — and it cannot easily be patched.
Ecobee is rolling back its Apple Home security system integration. In an update to its help document, Ecobee cites unexpected challenges as the reasoning.
There is no word on whether or not this is a permanent or temporary issue. This integration allowed users to control their Ecobee security system directly from the Home app.
Turning to some better news, SmartThings has become the first major platform to enable two-way unification of Thread networks. This allows SmartThings to join an existing Thread network, like one used for Apple Home.
Finally, we get into the two major tech events. Amazon announced a host of new devices including the Echo Dot Max, Echo Studio, Echo Show 8, and Echo Show 11.
There is no new low-cost Echo device, with the cheapest coming in at $100. Amazon also announced new versions of their Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.
Wrapping up the Amazon event was a bunch of camera news. Ring has a slew of Ring 2K and 4K cameras while Blink has new affordable 2K options.
At the Google event, it was a similar story with new smart speakers and cameras on display. Interestingly, Google is also focusing on the $100 price point, with a speaker that will debut in 2026.
Both Google and Amazon have AI strategies in play here, offering basic and paid versions of their respective smart assistants. It will be interesting to see how this evolves as Apple announces new versions of its smart speakers.
