The GDPR-compliant Nuki Smart Lock has arrived in the United States, and it'll upgrade the security of your Apple Smart home with 8 ways to unlock your door in under a second.

Smart locks come in many shapes and sizes, but they're not always top-quality or renter-friendly. Luckily, Nuki has a smart lock that's easy to retrofit to an existing deadbolt that's actually nice to look at.

Nuki is based in Austria and has to comply with Europe's strict GDPR rules for privacy, so users need not worry about needless data collection. The lock installs in under 15 minutes and offers 8 ways to unlock without changing the outward-facing lock.

Pair the Nuki Smart Lock with the Keypad 2 and Door Sensor for more functionality, all accessible via the Nuki app, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings. It connects over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Matter over Thread.

Nuki Smart Lock features

If you're new to the smart home ecosystem or want to interact with the Nuki Smart Lock directly, there's the Nuki app. It provides all of the functions of the lock, like auto-unlock, shared digital keys, passcode management, and an access log.

No need for landlords to worry, the external lock doesn't change

Connect Nuki to Apple Home for use in the Home app, even remotely with an Apple Home Hub like Apple TV, HomePod, or HomePod mini. It connects through Matter over Thread so it's fast and power-efficient.

Other Thread devices on your network, when paired with a Thread Border Router, create a network external to your Wi-Fi network that helps keep low-power devices connected. Since Apple Home supports Thread via Apple TV and HomePod, the Nuki smart lock will always have a reliable signal.

Use the Nuki app, Apple Watch, Auto Unlock, Siri, Nuki Web, and scheduled unlocks to access your home with just the Nuki Lock. Add on the Nuki Keypad 2 to gain fingerprint and code access.

Users can store up to 20 fingerprints and 200 codes for use with the Keypad 2. Add new codes remotely via the Nuki app when subscribed to Nuki Premium — a feature perfect for Airbnbs.

The Nuki Door Sensor pairs with your Nuki Lock to notify the user if the door is left open. Also, keep track of every time the door is opened, shut, and locked within the Nuki app and Apple Home app.

The Nuki Smart Lock is battery powered and will warn users when it reaches 20%. It can be fully recharged in two hours using the magnetic charging connector — and don't worry about getting locked out, your physical key still works. Off-door charging is possible as well if you prefer to charge when not in place.

The entire system is built on privacy, and users don't even need to create an account to use the lock. It can be operated entirely from Apple Home without the Nuki app or subscription.

Nuki Premium is free for early adopters, so purchase a smart lock before December 2025 to get the service for free. However, Nuki Premium is fully optional and isn't needed for remote control of the device through Apple Home or Matter.
