MacPaw, the maker of CleanMyMac and Setapp, has launched Moonlock, a cybersecurity app for macOS built to make protection simple for everyday users.

The Ukrainian developer announced Moonlock on October 28. The app is designed for people who feel overwhelmed by the complexity of digital security and want straightforward protection.

Moonlock offers real-time protection that continuously scans for and blocks threats even when the app is closed. For deeper checks, the Malware Scanner lets users run scheduled system scans.

The app offers a VPN for safer browsing on public Wi-Fi. It also features a Network Inspector that allows users to block connections to specific countries.

A System Protection tool guides users through macOS's built-in defenses. Additionally, Security Advisor provides practical advice for safer online habits.

Each feature includes clear, in-app explanations meant to help users understand what's happening and stay in control.

A human-centric approach

MacPaw positions Moonlock as part of its broader Software 3.0 initiative, which focuses on improving human-computer interaction. The company says its goal is to make security tools approachable rather than intimidating.

Moonlock is more than a malware scanner

The 2025 Moonlock Survey found that 66% of Mac users encountered at least one cyber threat in 2024, and malware detections rose 20% from 2023 to 2024. While those figures come from MacPaw's internal research, they show a steady rise in macOS threats.

Price & availability

Moonlock is available now for macOS with several pricing options, including a 7-day free trial and an annual subscription for $54. It's also part of MacPaw's Setapp service, giving current subscribers access at no extra cost.

Moonlock's pricing is comparable to many mainstream antivirus tools. Competitors like Bitdefender, Intego, and Norton offer similar annual plans, but they often focus on cross-platform coverage or enterprise-level control.

MacPaw believes that Mac users prefer a cleaner, lighter, and purpose-built solution for Apple's ecosystem. As a new entry, Moonlock's success will depend on whether its protection feels effortless.
