Sonnet has launched new Thunderbolt 5 PCIe enclosures for Mac, doubling data speeds and expanding options for high-performance workflows.
Sonnet Technologies just launched options for Thunderbolt-connected PCIe expansion aimed at professional Mac users. Thunderbolt 5 doubles the base bandwidth to 80 Gbps, with bursts up to 120 Gbps for video-heavy work.
The higher capacity lets one cable handle multiple high-resolution monitors and high-speed storage at the same time. It can also support other data-intensive devices without slowing down performance.
Actual results still depend on the quality of the cable and the hardware being used.
Only a few Macs have Thunderbolt 5 ports right now. Apple added them to the Mac mini M4 Pro and recent MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.
Older Macs with M4, M3, or M2 processors still use Thunderbolt 4, which tops out at 40 Gbps. They can connect to Thunderbolt 5 devices, but speeds won't go beyond the older standard.
xMac mini (2024+) rackmount systems
Sonnet's official announcement focuses on the xMac mini (2024+) family, a modular 2U rackmount system for one or two Mac mini computers with optional Thunderbolt-to-PCIe expansion. The half-width xMac mini module provides front-panel power buttons and easy access to ports in a space-efficient enclosure.
Buyers can pair the xMac mini (2024+) with one of two PCIe expansion options. The Echo II DV configuration provides two full-height, full-depth PCIe slots, with dedicated Thunderbolt links to each card and ultra-quiet Noctua fans.
The Echo III configuration offers three full-height, full-depth PCIe slots with a single Thunderbolt connection and the same quiet cooling.
Sonnet positions the dual-link Echo II DV for high-bandwidth PCIe cards, including workflows that benefit from fully dedicated Thunderbolt paths. The Echo III is framed for use cases like connecting three Avid Pro Tools | HDX cards to a single Mac mini.
The xMac mini (2024+) systems are now available from Sonnet. Wider distribution is expected to follow soon. The two-Mac-mini mounting module is priced at $479.99.
The rackmount system without an Echo module costs $699.99, while the Echo II DV or Echo III rackmount systems are priced at $1,799.99 each.
Echo SEL Thunderbolt 5
The Sonnet's Echo SEL Thunderbolt 5 enclosure is a compact, single-slot PCIe chassis. It's perfect for users who need high bandwidth without the extra bulk.
With up to 80 Gbps class throughput and a PCIe 4.0 x8 slot, Echo SEL supports low-profile, half-length cards like broadcast-grade video capture.
It's a practical choice for smaller setups that need strong PCIe performance. The two Thunderbolt 5 ports let users daisy-chain devices and expand their peripherals.
Echo SE I Thunderbolt 5
The Echo SE I Thunderbolt 5 is built for larger, more demanding PCIe cards than the SEL model. It supports half-length cards up to 7.75 inches long and includes an auxiliary power connector for devices that need extra power.
Two Thunderbolt 5 ports allow users to daisy-chain multiple devices without losing performance. It's a solid choice for video capture, specialized I/O, or real-time data processing on compact Mac setups.
xMac mini (2024+) + Echo systems at a glance
The rackmount xMac mini (2024+) can be purchased as a base system or paired with Echo II DV or Echo III modules to add PCIe slots and quiet cooling. Each configuration is designed to fit standard 19-inch racks while keeping Mac mini access simple for pro studios.
These products enable professionals to integrate high-speed video capture, pro audio, and other PCIe workflows with modern Macs without compromise.
Pricing & availability
The xMac mini (2024+) systems are now available directly from Sonnet. They will soon be available through worldwide resellers. The xMac mini module, which mounts two Mac minis, is priced at $479.99.
The base rackmount system without a PCIe module costs $699.99, while the Echo II DV and Echo III configurations with full PCIe expansion are priced at $1,799.99.
