Following approval by Australian medical regulators, Apple is now allowed to enable its Apple Watch hypertension feature in the country, though no specific date has been revealed yet.
First introduced in September 2025, Apple Watch can check for hypertension and alert users to seek treatment. It's been rolling out across the world as countries put it through their medical testing features.
Now according to Information Age, the feature is coming to Australia. The country's medical regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has formally approved the feature.
The Heart Foundation's chief medical officer, Professor Garry Jennings, said that TGA approval was "a good thing."
"This approach is not the solution [to hypertension], but it's one of the things that could help raise awareness of high blood pressure in some people," said Professor Jennings. "It's part of a growing trend to make health more outward looking, to bring consumers into the game at an earlier stage, and to give them an opportunity of keeping an eye on their own risk for future heart attacks, strokes, and other consequences of hypertension."
The TGA now lists the Apple Watch as a medical device on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). However, this does not mean that Australians can immediately turn on hypertension monitoring.
Rather, it means that Apple is now legally allowed to enable the feature. Apple Australia has not announced a launch date for it, however.
More than 150 countries have already approved the feature — with Canada being the most recent in October 2025. Apple appears to have turned on the feature soon after approval in most countries, so it's likely to be added soon in Australia.
When Apple does decide to enable the feature, it could wait for the next watchOS update to incorporate it. Apple last updated watchOS on December 12, 2025, which features including a Wi-Fi change mandated by the European Union.
At present, Apple's Australian online store does not promote the feature. Apple's support documentation also does not yet list Australia among the countries where hypertension notifications work.
