Shure's MV88 USB-C Stereo Microphone can now directly plug into the base of an iPhone, making it useful for vloggers on the go.
The Shure MV88 was originally released back in 2015, as a compact microphone that clips into the Lightning port of an iPhone or iPad. A decade later, Shure's brought it back up to date, complete with a connector change.
The new MV88 with USB-C uses the replacement of the Lightning port, in practically the same way. The intention is for it to be held in place at the bottom of an iPhone, with the microphone directly pointed at the user.
While Shure has released other similar microphones that connect straight to a USB-C port, such as the MV88+, this is the only model that does so directly. There's no cable needed between the microphone and the port with the new MV88.
It's also designed to be simple to use, as it doesn't require a battery. Users are literally expected to plug it into their iPhone and to get started using it.
It is a condenser microphone that has four different polar patterns. There is the stereo mode as well as mono cardioid and mono bidirectional options, and a raw mid-side.
There is an Auto-Level mode, where the MV88 continuously makes adjustments to gain in real time, so that the speaker isn't too loud or quiet. There's also a real-time denoiser function to cut down on background sounds.
While it can be used on its own, it can be further configured through the Motiv Audio and Motiv Video mobile apps or Motiv Mix on desktop. The apps provide presets as well as functions like EQ, compression, and even stereo width adjustment.
The new MB88 USB-C is available now from Sure directly, priced at $159.
