Crunchyroll has finally arrived on Apple TV as a dedicated channel, which means users can stream and download their favorite anime all within the Apple TV app.

When Apple first revealed Apple TV channels, it felt like the obvious endpoint for all streaming services. Netflix never joined up, and others like HBO exited channels, but one beloved service has finally appeared.

The anime streaming platform Crunchyroll has shown up as a channel within the Apple TV app. The official launch was Friday, but both platforms involved have remained quiet about it beyond the in-app ads.

Currently, the channel shows up as a black icon in the sidebar next to the orange icon for the app attachment. The channel and app service are completely separate and require different subscriptions.

You cannot link your existing Crunchyroll account or Up Next with the new channel. If you pay annually, like I did, you have to get a prorated refund and start paying the new monthly subscription in the app.

If you want to get an annual subscription, access to the other tiers which include the manga app, or any other variation, you can't do it via the channel. The Apple TV channel has only one option — Premium at $9.99 per month.

The Crunchyroll FAQ on the new channel has a few details. It says that the full catalog for the available regions is available, which are the US, Australia, Canada, and UK.

However, the rollout seems to be encountering some issues. Advertised shows and content that is otherwise available in the Crunchyroll app isn't showing up in the channel.

For example, Dragon Ball Z is only available in Japanese via the Crunchyroll channel, while English is available in the app. The new anime You and I Are Polar Opposites only lets you watch via the Crunchyroll app.

I expect these will resolve with time. It would be unfortunate if the catalog is split in any way, as it would defeat the purpose of the channel, especially at that price.

With the Crunchyroll channel, you won't need to have the app installed. It launches with the Apple native video player and controls as well, so it is a much better experience overall.

Let's hope that other apps follow suit and join Apple's channels list. While Netflix is sure to hold out, HBO could always make a return.

Crunchyroll shows up as a $9.99 per month subscription within the Apple TV app and users get a one week free trial. The subscription cannot be used to sign into the Crunchyroll website or app.
