Apple added native photorealistic image generation to Image Playground at WWDC 2026, bringing photo-realistic AI-created images to the app for the first time as part of iOS 27.

The updated Image Playground can generate realistic images directly from text prompts. Users can also continue creating images in the app's existing Animation, Illustration, and Sketch styles.

Apple announced the changes during its WWDC keynote as part of a broader Apple Intelligence update for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The addition closes a notable gap between Image Playground and competing AI image generators. Tools from OpenAI, Google, and other companies have increasingly focused on photorealistic output.

Apple's image-generation feature remained centered on illustrations, stickers, avatars, and other stylized creations. When Image Playground launched, Apple limited the app to a small set of visual styles.

Those styles produced images that looked more like artwork than photographs. The approach helped distinguish the feature from other AI image generators entering the market.

Apple has significantly enhanced its image generation capabilities in iOS 26 by integrating ChatGPT into Image Playground. The update introduces an "Any Style" option, enabling users to create images beyond Apple's standard visual formats.

Apple's own support documentation reflected the change. One example prompt suggested creating "a realistic image of a stork" for a baby shower invitation.

With iOS 27, realistic image generation becomes a built-in feature rather than an option accessed through ChatGPT. Apple also updated Image Playground with new image-generation models and additional controls for refining generated images.

Realistic images bring Image Playground closer to rivals

Image Playground's latest update enhances its utility for various projects by offering photorealistic images, which are ideal for presentations, invitations, mockups, and wallpapers.

The move reflects the shift in expectations for AI image generation. Realistic image creation is now a standard feature across many platforms, distinguishing Apple's earlier focus on stylized output.

Image Playground is available now in the iOS 27 developer beta. Apple plans to release a public beta later in 2026 before making iOS 27 available to all users this fall.
