Apple says that most new Apple Intelligence features will work on the same devices as before, but an unclear number will require the latest iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The most significant part of Apple's WWDC announcement was the extensive array of features coming to Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. It's at last the natural language and contextual Siri we've been promised, plus major new features for Visual Intelligence in cameras.

However, Craig Federighi, though, has specified that some will require specific models of Macs, iPhones, or iPads.

"Our most powerful on-device model and the features it enables like expressive voices and more advanced dictation," said Federighi during the keynote video, "will be coming to our most capable iPhone, iPad, and Mac systems."

Those are:

  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPad with M4 and later (with 12GB or more memory)
  • Mac with M3 and later (with 12GB or more memory)

It's not clear yet which features these are, however. We've already asked, and don't have an answer yet.

Apple's published specifications list only the same devices as for the previous generation of Apple Intelligence.

Those notes do, though, repeat what Federighi also said about usage limits. "Some features," says Apple, "including image generation, have daily usage limits because they rely on powerful server models."

Apple does also note, however, that increased access is available "with most iCloud+ subscription plans." As yet, though, the company has not specified which plans will or won't get this extra usage.
