After returning from a rather chaotic Macworld, Apple's Mac OS Developer team was quick to pound out the third alpha build of Mac OS 9.1 Update, which the company has code-named 'Fortissimo.'
The build, as said by its developers, resolves a number of network issues which plagued earlier builds. Apple is also working to update the remaining parts of the OS to the Carbon API set, while discarding or replacing those components that cannot successfully be updated to the new Application Programming Interface in their current form.
While most of the juicy tidbits regarding Fortissimo have already been published in our previous report, there have been some noted changes to Apple's Language Kits.
Starting with version 1.1 — which will ship as part of Fortissimo — most of the fonts that were in the CD Extras in Mac OS 9.0 will now be installed as part of Language Kits. Additionally, all of the kit's components — including input methods and fonts — will be updated to newer versions. Apple's unicode script bundle and keyboards will no longer be installed as default, but rather placed in the Unicode folder in CD Extras.
Apple has run into a number of small problems with the build, as is customary with prerelease software testing. Currently, PowerBook 1400's will not boot properly with the new OS, while slot-loading iMacs refuse to wake up from sleep. These, and a number of additional issues, will be fixed before the release is upgraded to beta status.
