Apple's online store gains new category for accessibility-focused accessories

Apple on Thursday launched an "Accessibility" section on its online store, making it somewhat easier for the disabled or their caretakers to find equipment for use with Mac and iOS devices.

So far the section offers just 15 products, divided into three types: "Vision," "Physical & Motor Skills," and "Learning & Literacy." Shoppers can further refine their searches by iPhone, iPad, or Mac compatibility.

Many of these are from AbleNet, such as its BIGtrack Trackball Mouse. Perhaps the most expensive items on the list however are HumanWare's Brailliant BI 32 and BI 40 Braille Displays, which cost $2,594.95 and $2,994.95, respectively. These can be connected to both Mac and iOS devices.

In December rumors emerged that Apple might begin selling accessibility-related gear in its retail outlets, starting in early 2016. Today's rollout could be a middle step towards that goal.

Both iOS and OS X have extensive accessibility functions built-in, but the disabled can still need third-party peripherals to actually interact with them.
