Seagate unveils Fast SSD, LaCie Rugged Secure & LaCie DJI Copilot drives

Seagate on Tuesday introduced several new external storage drives, including ones in partnership with LaCie and drone maker DJI.

The Seagate Fast SSD is a portable, shock-resistant drive working at speeds up to 540 megabytes per second. It connects to Macs via USB-C, and comes in 250-gigabyte, 500-gigabyte, and 1-terabyte versions costing $99, $169, and $349.

The LaCie Rugged Secure is a drop-resistant model further designed to operate in sub-zero temperatures. The "Secure" part of its name stems from hardware encryption, which automatically password-locks the drive once it's disconnected from its host computer. A lone 2-terabyte configuration is priced at $139.

The LaCie DJI Copilot has 2 terabytes of storage, an SD slot, and a USB port, and is meant to let pilots ingest and review video at full resolution without a laptop. Up to 65 hours of 4K 30fps video can be saved.

A phone or tablet is used to manage files, and in fact the drive even comes with its own power bank, meant to recharge those devices.

All three drives will ship sometime this spring.

The Patriot units mentioned in an earlier article seem like better value for money. The 1TB version of the Patriot is priced at about half-again what the LaCie costs, but because of the PCIe controller and fast storage the device is 2-3 times as fast at the LaCie. It costs more, but the price/performance ratio is actually better -- more bits per dollar.
