Denon Home Sound Bar 550 has Dolby Atmos and AirPlay 2 support

The Denon Home Sound Bar 550

Announced at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show, the new Denon Home Sound Bar 550 is the latest HEOS speaker with Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res audio, and AirPlay 2.

The Denon HEOS platform hopes to compete with Sonos with wireless whole-home audio and home theater systems. The Denon Home Sound Bar 550 is a compact sound bar with plenty of intelligent features.

The headlining feature is Dolby Atmos support. Users can get full 3D audio from the tiny sound bar and can connect rear speakers and a subwoofer for more immersion.

AirPlay 2 means you can group Denon HEOS speakers with your HomePod and other AirPlay speakers. You'll be able to connect to the speaker via Siri commands or the AirPlay menu on your iPhone.

Other features include Google Assistant support, Hi-Res audio, and multiple music apps like Pandora, Tidal, and Apple Music. You'll even be able to connect an external drive filled with your personal Hi-Res audio collection.

Included ports

  • HDMI eARC out
  • 4K HDMI in
  • Optical in
  • Aux in
  • Ethernet
  • USB

The Denon Home Sound Bar 550 is available from Denon's website for $599, though it is out of stock as of Thursday morning.

With so much wifi hype are there any 'open' wifi Dolby Atmos options that allow discrete component systems to be assembled with AirPlay 2, perhaps using AirPort Express which offered analogue out for true flexibility including vintage audiophile equipment ?
