Apple TV has signed "Homeland" creator Gideon Raff to produce a new espionage series based on a thriller by best-selling author Dan Fesperman.
Apple TV has long had a reputation for science fiction hits, such as "Silo," but the streamer is building one for thrillers. As well as "Slow Horses" and the same team's new "Down Cemetery Road," it has now ordered an eight-part espionage series called "Safe Houses."
Based on the 11th thriller by ex-journalist Dan Fesperman, it concerns the aftermath when a high-ranking CIA officer is murdered in Madrid. The murder is then investigated simultaneously by his widow, and by a fugitive agent accused of the crime.
Between them, the two begin "unraveling a vast conspiracy that could upend the balance of global power," according to Apple.
No cast has been announced yet, nor any production date.
What has been announced is that the series is to be showrun and execeutive produced by Gideon Raff. As well as co-developing "Homeland," Raff created "The Spy" for Netflix and Canel+.
Based on his career to date, it's probable that Raff is writing at least some of the episodes. However, despite Apple's claimed championing of creatives, it yet again doesn't bother to mention who the show's writers are.
It does say that Raff will direct some episodes. And that Otto Bathurst, known for Steven Knight's "Peaky Blinders," will direct the opening editions.
