With support for PCIe 4.0 cards, triple 8K displays, and speeds rivaling internal storage, OWC's new expansion chassis brings workstation power to Apple's smallest desktops.

OWC has launched the Mercury Helios 5S, a new PCIe expansion chassis that taps the speed of Thunderbolt 5. Starting at $329.99, it delivers up to 6,000 MB/s of device bandwidth and adds pro-grade PCIe card support to Apple's latest M-series desktops.

The Mercury Helios 5S gives users of the Mac Studio, Mac mini, or other Thunderbolt Macs a way to add internal-grade expansion externally.

The expansion chassis houses one PCIe 4.0 x4 (x16 mechanical) slot for half-length, full-height, single-width or double-width cards. Professionals can use NVMe RAID controllers, 8K capture cards, high-speed networking, or audio DSP hardware.

OWC says the chassis supports up to 6,000 MB/s of bandwidth. That's enough to run PCIe 4.0 x4 cards at full speed, including professional storage, capture, and audio cards.

Real-world display support depends on the host Mac's GPU and Thunderbolt controller. Capabilities vary by model.

Ports and connectivity

The Mercury Helios 5S works with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 3 Macs, as well as USB4 PCs. It requires macOS 15.3 or later for Thunderbolt 5 hosts, with plug-and-play operation across compatible devices.

  • One PCIe 4.0 x4 (x16 mechanical) slot for half-length, full-height cards
  • One host Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) connection, up to 80 Gb/s
  • Three Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) ports, each with 15 W power delivery
  • Support for up to three 8K displays at 60 Hz or two at 120 Hz
  • Includes a 0.7-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable and 90 W external power supply

GPUs and cards requiring more than 75 W of power or x8 bandwidth aren't supported. It's designed for professional expansion cards rather than GPUs or other high-power components.

How it compares to the Mercury Helios 3S

Before comparing generations, it's worth seeing how OWC has evolved its expansion lineup to take advantage of Thunderbolt 5's higher bandwidth and modern Mac hardware.

The Helios 5S replaces OWC's earlier Mercury Helios 3S, which launched in 2021 with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. That model supported 40 Gb/s throughput and a single PCIe 3.0 slot, making it ideal for moderate expansion needs.

The new design moves to an 80 Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 interface, adds three Thunderbolt 5 ports, and boosts PCIe card performance to modern workstation levels.

In practice, that means professionals using the latest Macs can connect faster storage arrays or high-speed network adapters without hitting a bandwidth ceiling. Thunderbolt 5 doubles the available throughput of the previous generation, removing many of the bottlenecks seen with Thunderbolt 3.

Thunderbolt 5 also expands external display support to three 8K monitors, a major upgrade for post-production and multi-display workflows.

Expanding what Thunderbolt 5 can do

Thunderbolt 5 offers twice the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, reaching up to 120 Gb/s for display-heavy workloads. That extra capacity lets creative professionals run PCIe 4.0 x4 cards externally at full speed.

OWC's Helios 5S is among the first accessories to use that new headroom effectively. It brings true PCIe expansion to the desktop without requiring a tower Mac.

The design is likely to appeal to post-production teams and 8K editors. Audio engineers who need specialized cards but prefer Apple's smaller systems will also find it attractive.

Pricing and availability

The Mercury Helios 5S is available now for $329.99 through OWC's online store and authorized resellers. Each unit includes a Thunderbolt 5 cable, external power supply, and a three-year limited warranty.
