After years of refusing to add its most-requested feature, CarPlay, Tesla may finally be caving.
Bloomberg reports that Tesla is developing support for CarPlay, citing people familiar with the matter. To date, Tesla vehicles have shipped with the company's own software and support for select third-party apps.
Despite Tesla's infotainment system being among the better options, drivers have long said that they would like to be able to use their own apps.. Apple CarPlay allows that, while adding more options for navigation and more.
The move would be seen as something of a reversal for CEO Elon Musk. For years, he's said that CarPlay wasn't required. His outbursts around Apple's App Store policies, among other things, also make for an interesting working relationship with the iPhone maker. Musk even sued Apple earlier this year.
It's reported that Tesla has been discussing the launch of CarPlay support for some months. But those hoping for any imminent announcement will be disappointed to learn that no plans have yet been finalized.
The news that Tesla could add CarPlay support comes at a time when other carmakers are taking it away. General Motors has been particularly vocal, saying that it will remove CarPlay and Android Auto from all future vehicles.
For its part, Apple continues to improve CarPlay to try and get drivers and carmakers on board. The recent iOS 26 update brought a number of CarPlay upgrades to navigation, calling, and more.
Apple is also working to roll CarPlay Ultra out to more vehicles. The enhanced CarPlay Ultra experience allows Apple to take over multiple in-car displays. Carmakers have been reticent to hand control of those screens to Apple, however.
