Drivers in Arkansas and Virginia will be able to add their driver's license to Apple Wallet — but it's not clear exactly when.
While both of these states already have digital driver's licenses, they're limited in one key way. Drivers must use dedicated apps to view them.
That will all change when Arkansas and Virginia allow those same licenses to be added to the Apple Wallet app. The licenses will then be available via the Wallet app on the driver's iPhone and Apple Watch.
It's as-yet unknown when Arkansas and Virginia will support Apple Wallet. However, a MacRumors report notes that their websites say they have "signed on to adopt ID in Apple Wallet in the future."
The (U.S.) state of play
Currently, there are 14 states and territories that support adding driver's licenses to the Wallet app, with seven confirmed to be on the way.
Those already online include:
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Maryland
- Montana
- New Mexico
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- West Virginia
- Puerto Rico
With today's news, another 7 states will add Apple Wallet support in the future:
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Utah
- Virginia
Digital driver's licenses can be added to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone 8 and newer devices running iOS 16.5 or later. The Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 9.5 also supports the feature.
