CNN quietly pulled its feed from Apple News, a temporary move allegedly tied to ongoing contract talks.

If you woke up expecting to read your CNN feed from the Apple News app, you were probably a bit confused this morning. That's because CNN has decided to pull its content off the Apple-branded news aggregator — at least for now.

The reason is, fortunately, pretty routine. CNN's contract to bring its feed to Apple News is up for renewal.

Until the two companies hash out a new deal, which Semafor says is already in the works, you'll have to get your CNN stories elsewhere. There's no current timeframe for when it will return.

Apple News as a service

Apple News is both an app and a service. The app is designed to function as a native news aggregator that gives users one convenient place to catch up on whatever newsfeeds they follow.

The service, Apple's paid Apple News+, gives users access to paywalled content across hundreds of publications. Users can currently subscribe for $12.99.

As Semafor notes, this model has been a huge deal for both Apple and news publishers. And it's been a net positive for users, too.

In the $12.99 price tag, users get some serious bang for their buck.

Chiefly, it prevents users from needing to maintain dozens of paid subscriptions to news sites — many of which can be difficult to cancel. In an era where more publications are turning to subscriptions to offset dwindling ad revenue, this seems to be a workable middle ground for all involved.

But there are a few other perks, too. Users can create an offline reading library, a recipe repository, and even access a few daily games.
