Speculation of an OLED iPad mini continues to grow, with a leaker believing it will arrive before the end of 2026.
Apple's iPad Pro lineup has already shifted to OLED, and with the general trend in Apple's hardware shifting towards using the display tech, others are expected to make the move eventually. If a leaker is to be trusted, that could happen within a year for one iPad model.
In a Weibo post on Wednesday, serial leaker Instant Digital claims that the iPad mini will be the first non-Pro iPad to feature OLED. However, they say there's no sign of movement for an OLED iPad Air.
In conversation with their readers, Instant Digital does offer more information about its potential release date. They explain that the earliest it will be released is in the third or fourth quarter of 2026.
Weibo leakers don't tend to have a great track record for accuracy, due to a tendency to regurgitate rumors from elsewhere with few processes for fact checking. By comparison, Instant Digital is one of the better Weibo leakers when it comes to getting claims right, having shared rumors that have, on occasion, proven to be right.
Amassing rumors
While the word of one Weibo leaker isn't necessarily a strong indicator of a product specification change in the future, it does fit in to a wider narrative about the next iPad mini.
Multiple different sources have either claimed or indicated that an OLED iPad mini is on the horizon, and for the same general timeframe of late 2026.
One early rumor from May 2024 said Samsung Display had started to develop a new panel for the iPad mini, including OLED variants. Later in the year, in October, generally reliable display supply chain analyst Ross Young shared that the next iPad mini will get OLED, restating the rumor months later in December.
In April 2025, leaker Digital Chat Station said Apple had started evaluating small-size OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display, ahead of mass production later in the year. More recently, Bloomberg reiterated the rumors in October 2025, expecting an early 2026 launch for the model.
The OLED display will be the big selling point of the iPad mini, but it won't be the only one. A code leak from August pointed to the model updating its chip to the A19 Pro, as used in the iPhone 17 Pro.
