On this week's episode of the HomeKit Insider podcast, your host goes over some Matter camera news, the launch of new devices, and hypothesizes on the future of Apple's smart home display.
With the announcement of Matter 1.5 and camera support, we reached out to a few accessory makers to get their take. Multiple companies have pledged support for new and existing cameras over the next several months ahead of CES.
Xthings has announced its Ulticam IQ 2 that will be available in December and ship with Matter, even if no platforms support it yet. Aqara has announced some of its cameras will be updated, while new devices will be coming in the first half of 2026.
Eve has unfortunately signaled that its existing cameras — the Eve Outdoor Cam and Eve Cam — do not have the requirements for Matter as they were developed before the spec. That said, it says it is developing new cameras from the ground up for the standard.
Also in the news, Sonoff released a new Matter-over-Wi-Fi 2-gang in-wall relay. Finally, Onvis updated its S4 smart plug with Matter 1.4 support and Thread 1.4.
After the news, we talk more in-depth about Apple's as-of-yet-unannounced smart display. Still rumored for spring of 2026, we read the tea leaves about how Apple's latest technology can easily come together to create a more compelling product than if it was released two years ago.
We wrap the episode by reviewing the Nomad Tracking Card Pro, a new wallet-style Find My tracker. While it is a bit thicker than most, it has incredible battery life of over a year.
