The expected second-generation Apple Studio Display is once more predicted to feature an updated 120Hz ProMotion display, with new code leaks backing up previous claims.
Back in February 2025, screen analyst Ross Young claimed that Apple would release its first-ever update to the Studio Display in late 2025. Young was specific that there would be a backlighting improvement, but also said ProMotion might be coming.
Then in August 2025, a new claim based on leaked code backed up the claim that a revised Studio Display is coming. That leak, though, also included references to what might be a different display altogether.
Now, as first spotted by Macworld, more leaked iOS 26 code appears to confirm that the monitor will feature a variable refresh rate. That rate is said to be up to 120Hz, which at least implies ProMotion.
The same code backs up Young's earlier claim of improvements in backlighting, too. It's been reported that the next Studio Display will switch to using MiniLED backlighting instead of LED.
Plus, the new code leak at least points to the new display being powered by the A19 processor, as the next iPad is now expected to be.
At points, the code reportedly references a new monitor with the Apple internal identifier of J527. That matches a September 2025 report that Apple was working on two screens, a J427 and J527.
The new leak does not make it any clearer whether this means there will be two different displays, or two versions of the same Studio Display 2.
Previous rumors have alternated between saying the next Studio Display will stay at the current 27-inch size, or that it might increase to 32 inches. Conceivably, the current 5K resolution could also be increased to 6K or even 7K, but there's been no recent confirmation of this.
