The Jason Clarke drama "The Last Frontier" did not survive on Apple TV, as the streaming service canceled the Alaskan wilderness show after a single season.

Following the release of the trailer on September 18, there were high hopes for the ten-episode series The Last Frontier on Apple TV. However, after the broadcast of its season finale, it seems the show has crashed and burned.

According to Variety on December 19, Apple declined to move to a second season of the show. While a reason for the cancellation wasn't disclosed, the show did suffer from mixed reviews, including a score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show followed Frank Remnick, played by Jason Clarke, as a U.S. marshal tasked with managing remote backcountry in Alaska. The peace is ruined by a prison transport plane crash that didn't seem like an accident, but also led to the release of dozens of surviving inmates.

Aside from Clarke, the cast included Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, and Alfre Woodard.

Following the finale, show creators Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D'Ovidio were apparently discussing how a second season could happen. This included a potential change in location due to apparently exhausting the supply of stories in Alaska, while also realizing that U.S. Marshals operate around the world.

Whether that second series becomes a reality remains to be seen. For the moment, though, Apple TV has abandoned the show in the Arctic tundra, with no immediate signs of rescue.
