Following reports of Apple looking to include a 200MP camera in the iPhone in 2028, a leaker unsurprisingly says there's no prototype being tested yet.
The most recent of multiple reports about Apple adding a 200MP camera to the iPhone, claimed that it will first appear in a 2028 iPhone. Now regular leaker Digital Chat Station has said on Weibo that Apple is not even at the prototype stage yet.
That seems unsurprising given how far off a September 2028 launch is. It's also not startling that the leaker further says Apple's engineers are instead focused on developing the 48MP camera expected in the 2026 iPhone range.
Digital Chat Station does say, in translation, that the 200MP camera is at "the material testing stage." Apple is said to be evaluating its supply chain, which fits with the recent report that it is looking to add more camera component suppliers.
As for the 2026 iPhone range, the leaker repeats his or her previous claims about it. Those are that it will be a variable aperture 48MP system, and that the telephoto lens will gain a larger aperture.
The aperture is what lets light through to the camera's sensor, and being able to vary its size means more in-camera effects such as depth of field. Traditionally, iPhones and other smartphones have had to have a fixed aperture system because of space constraints.
Note that Digital Chat Station is a regular but only sporadically accurate leaker.
Separately, the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro has been rumored by some sources to get under-display Face ID sensors. Others, though, think that won't happen until the 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027.
