'Dark Castle,' a game released in 1986 for early compact Macintoshes, is being released for modern Macs with its sequel, 'Beyond Dark Castle,' included.
The two games will be rolled into Return to Dark Castle, bringing the legendary platforming game to modern computers. The game will be available for both the Mac and PC, as well as Valve's Steam Deck.
Dark Castle's resurrection is thanks to a new publisher, Ludit Games. Notably, the publisher is an independent studio founded by Mark Pierce, the animator and a co-creator of the original Macintosh title.
The original Dark Castle saw gamers play as Prince Duncan, navigating four distinct areas of a castle. The aim was to overthrow the evil Black Knight, collecting items to aid their task as they went.
Players will "step into the boots of a new hero on a quest to defeat the Black Knight and reclaim the castle's secrets", the game's description explains. "Expect classic challenge, slapstick misfortune, and finely tuned puzzle-platforming that rewards skill and patience".
Return to Dark Castle's Steam page says that the title will include all of the original Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle levels, fully remastered. 50 brand-new rooms will also be included, as will support for both keyboard and gamepad controls.
Other modern features, like the ability to save, replay, and share the gamer's best runs, are included while still paying homage to the original games' 1980s versions. Gamers can also look forward to remastered audio as well as the original games' music.
While Return to Dark Castle might have its roots in the early days of Apple computers, this version will require modern silicon. An M1 chip or an Intel Core 2 Duo is required in order to play it this time around. There's no word on pricing or a firm release date as yet.
This isn't the first time that Dark Castle has had a re-release or port. The original game was also released for the Sega Genesis in 1991, while a mobile version was also released in 2008.
