Apple has quietly clarified the future of Pixelmator's decade-old iPad app, confirming that while it still works, its days of active development are over.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that Pixelmator Pro would be coming to iPad. That left many wondering about the fate of Pixelmator Pro's diminutive counterpart, Pixelmator.

Scrolling all the way to the bottom of Apple's Pixelmator Pro page gives us a glimpse into the fate of Pixelmator — which it refers to as "Pixelmator Classic." The footnote under the "How does Pixelmator Pro compare to Pixelmator Classic for iPad?" section reads:

"Pixelmator Classic for iOS, released in 2014 as a companion app to the now-discontinued Pixelmator Classic for Mac, provides basic image editing features such as cropping, color adjustments, and effects. It remains a functional app but is no longer being updated."

So, it seems that Apple isn't quite killing off Pixelmator just yet. But, as the app will no longer receive updates, it's likely that it won't hang around forever, either.

Pixelmator Pro is part of the new Apple Creator Studio. Specifically, it's promoted as a key image-editing tool in the app collection.

The app already exists for macOS users, but Tuesday's announcement revealed that the much-loved app would also be made available for iPad come January 28.

Apple initially acquired the team behind Pixelmator Pro in late 2024. In mid-2025, the company made its first update to the app, adding more RAW support and Apple Intelligence-powered Image Playground.
