This is actually true: a Utah senator is sponsoring a bill that would see Android adopted as an official state mobile operating system for absolutely no reason at all. In the history of dumb ideas, this is pretty high on the list.
Roughly half of the US likes Android, half like the iPhone, and from time to time people try out each. You do you. And if Senate Majority Leader Kirk Cullimore (R-Sandy) is an Android fan, that's a fact of totally no interest to anyone whatsoever.
But it apparently matters a lot to Cullimore, so given his position, he is taking time in the Utah 2026 legislative session to try to get it done. According to KSL local news, Cullimore said it was also about the green and blue bubbles complaint.
Reportedly, some in the Utah senate cheered when this nonsense was announced, although others booed. Fellow Republican Mike McKell felt compelled to ask: "Is this a real bill?"
Apparently, yes.
"Someday, everybody with an iPhone will realize that the technology is better on Android," Cullimore said to reporters, who wrote this down like it was important.
"I'm the only one in my family - all my kids, my wife, they all have iPhones," he added pathetically, "but I'm holding strong."
There are 179 Senate Bills listed on the 2026 Utah Legislature site, covering many budget issues, tax, health, human trafficking, child abuse, and at number 138, "State Mobile Operating System Designation."
These are all to be debated in committee, alongside 320 House Bills. Those range from social services issues and public infrastructure, to nuclear regulations and firearms topics.
So together with 46 other assorted resolutions, that makes a total of 545 topics to go through at least some stages of committee during this legislative session.
If you don't see this bill as a waste of time, and instead feel that our political leaders have the right to pursue their passion projects, consider this statement from Cullimore.
"I don't expect this to really get out of committee," he said.
So even he knows this is a waste of time that should be being spent on issues that matter. The difference is, only Cullimore has to now go back to his iPhone-owning family and continue pretending daddy has a real important job.
