A new rumor claims that Apple is considering adding a DSLR-like teleconverter to the iPhone 18 Pro, increasing the cameras' focal length and zoom.

Previous rumors about the iPhone 18 Pro have included the claim that it will feature a variable aperture camera. Now a new report from leaker "Smart Pikachu" on Weibo backs up the variable aperture camera — but also introduces a totally new rumor.

While the claim offers no details, it says that a teleconverter is being evaluated. That would be a kind of magnifying lens that increases the camera's focal length.

The result should be that the iPhone would have a greater zoom than before. A teleconverter is similar in principle to the kind of external iPhone lenses that third-party firms such as Moment manufacture.

As well as the benefit of a greater zoom, though, teleconverters also reduce the amount of light getting through to the sensor. It means that it reduces the camera's ability to shoot effectively in low light situations.

There's also typically a loss of sharpness and contrast, plus the teleconverter can magnify any flaws in the iPhone's lens.

Given how the one thing that is improved in every generation of the iPhone is the camera, it is more than likely that Apple has been researching teleconverters. However, if Apple is only now evaluating it, there is little chance the teleconverter will appear in the iPhone 18 Pro.

Note that while Smart Pikachu has a good reputation for Android leaks, he or she does not have a track record in ones regarding Apple. Their most recent claim is that the iPhone 17e will launch in February 2026.
