M5 Max Mac Studio & New Studio Display could finally arrive in the spring

Apple's Mac desktop lineup should get M5 variants and the Studio Display may finally get its long-awaited upgrade just after M5 Pro and Max MacBook Pros arrive. Here's what to expect, and when.

Apple Silicon has been on a fairly predictable near-annual update cycle, which means the Mac lineup gets updated at a similar cadence. While some chips are short-cycled, others take just a bit longer, which seems to be the case for the Mac Studio in 2026.

According to the Power On newsletter from Mark Gurman, Apple will release the Mac Studio and Studio Display "not long after" the spring Mac updates. The Mac mini is also expected to get an update in 2026 as well.

None of these statements are particularly revelatory given Apple's release cadence. The M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studio was revealed on March 5, 2025.

While rumors have been flying about an upgraded Studio Display for years, it wasn't until iOS 26 that more concrete evidence of an impending launch appeared. While the exact timing wasn't known, it was clear that a Studio Display with ProMotion could arrive at any point in the cycle.

Given that one hasn't been revealed yet, a spring release is an obvious conclusion to arrive at.

The Mac mini was redesigned and released with M4 and M4 Pro in October 2024. The consumer-focused device didn't get an update in 2025, though that is likely tied to how late the M5 launched in the year and it being used in iPad Pro, Apple Vision Pro, and entry MacBook Pro for the initial release.

Apple has been clearly constrained in processor orders in the supply chain, so rather than rolling out the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max all at once, it saw a much more staggered release. The remaining chip bumps could occur at any time, though the report remained vague — stating only that the updated Mac mini would release sometime in 2026.

It is going to be a busy spring for Apple. The iPhone 17e is due to launch very soon, plus new Apple Home products, possible updates to Apple TV, HomePod, HomePod mini, and a full Apple Intelligence revamp are all expected before WWDC.
