Apple Vision Pro users could see more apps and games come to the platform thanks to NVIDIA CloudXR and the Foveated Streaming framework made available in visionOS 26.4.
It has been two years since Apple Vision Pro debuted, but Apple is still working to get more developer support. The latest update found in visionOS 26.4 could mean more apps, games, and experiences for the platform in the near future.
According to Apple's developer documentation, a new feature called Foveated Streaming is available with visionOS 26.4. It helps ensure processing power is saved by only rendering what the user is looking at in the highest resolution and limiting detail in the periphery.
Apple says that Foveated Streaming provides the developer with the ability to stream high-quality content while maintaining user privacy. There are more advanced features included too, like having local processing for RealityKit objects while relying on cloud processing for exteriors.
Developers can enable streaming with the following three components:
- NVIDIA CloudXR Runtime
- Streaming Manager Protocol
- Apple Vision Pro client app
All these requirements mean that the developer needs to use the right OpenXR-compliant runtime, have a protocol for managing the stream, and an app for the user to interface with to interact with the streamed software. The app should be native and display streamed content in an immersive space.
Apple Vision Pro users don't need to concern themselves with the details of this framework. The point is that it should be easier to get more advanced experiences on Apple Vision Pro.
There are gaming companies that work on apps that stream VR content to Apple Vision Pro that will benefit from this feature greatly. It should mean better local performance, less lag, and improved visuals for the user.
The Foveated Streaming feature debuted as a beta in the visionOS 26.4 beta. It could be some time before any software or games are implemented with the software.
