Apple's supply chain partners have been warned that mass production of iPhone Fold components could be pushed back if current setbacks aren't overcome. "More time is needed."

The iPhone Fold has been rumored since Samsung foldables first hit the market in 2019. Even though the expensive category never grew out of a select niche, vocal Apple fans have hoped for such a product from the company for years.

It seemed that 2026 would finally be the year Apple unveiled an iPhone Fold, but that hope may be misplaced. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Apple's supply chain has been warned of a potential mass production and shipment delay.

The report also mentioned that Apple hopes to produce 7 million to 8 million iPhone Folds for sale. That's less than 10% of Apple's planned production volume for 2026, which includes both sizes of iPhone Pro model.

"It's true that more issues than expected have emerged during the early test production phase, and additional time will be needed to resolve them and make necessary adjustments. ... The current situation could put the mass production timeline at risk," one of the people familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia. "April will mark a crucial stage of the engineering verification test, and this month till early May is extremely critical."

The report arrives just hours after a leaker shared that trial production had begun at Foxconn. That may be true, though the leaker didn't supply an exact date of when testing began.

Leaks tend to take some time to get out, so there's a chance Instant Digital was working with old information, while Nikkei Asia was able to break the news more immediately. That's because the source of this story is direct from supply chain companies that received notice from Apple.

The iPhone Fold has been rumored to be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September. Other rumors suggested that would still occur, but that the iPhone Fold would arrive at an unknown later date.

It seems that was based on information obtained before this latest detail was handed over to the supply chain. Although, this isn't the first we've heard of a potential delay.

iPhone Fold still not guaranteed in 2026

If Apple can't overcome whatever issues it has encountered in preparing for mass production, it could delay shipments by months. That's far more than what was suggested previously, which was more like October.

iPhone Fold may remain an unreleased product at Apple

Apple's entire marketing plan is built around a September to October launch. If there's a delay to December or later, the announcement itself could be held back.

The lack of an iPhone Fold in September could also prove awkward for Apple, as it has reportedly expected to shift iPhone shipments around too. The premium devices arrive in the fall, then the standard ones in the spring.

That strategy is still sound with just three to four models, sans iPhone Fold, but a lot was probably hinging on the foldable shipping. Apple may have several difficult decisions to make in the next few days, as time is critical.

The foldable market hasn't taken off in six years, and Apple's time and effort has led to multiple snags in early testing. The lack of component leaks suggests this device isn't as far along as leakers like to think.

Anymore significant delay or challenge could result in the iPhone Fold never being announced at all.
