Dropbox gets drag and drop support for iPad in latest update

Dropbox updated its iOS app on Tuesday with a few new features suited for iOS 11's iPad-centric features, including the ability to drag and drop files between folders and other apps.

Coupled with iOS 11, Dropbox version 92.2 delivers a long overdue user interface revamp for iPad and iPad Pro owners.

Drag-and-drop files are perhaps the most notable change offered up in today's update. Limited to iPads running iOS 11, the feature lets users move files around both Dropbox and the wider iOS ecosystem without in-app UI cues or share sheets. Simply perform a tap-and-hold gesture on a file, drag it to a desired location — or app — and let go to drop the file in place.

Part of a major UI overhaul that shipped with iOS 11, drag and drop for iPad mimics file management features common to desktop operating systems in a bid to enhance the tablet's multitasking toolset. In addition to files, which can be selected in bulk during a mutlitouch drag-and-drop operation, apps can be dragged and dropped into their own multitasking view.

Prior to today's update, Dropbox power users looking for drag and drop functionality were relegated to Apple's Files app, which integrates with a number of cloud-based file sharing services including iCloud.

The latest Dropbox iteration also features full-screen file navigation for iPad, allowing users to see long filenames by collapsing the preview pane.

In addition, enhanced security features let users grant access to restricted files from their mobile device, whether it be an iPhone or iPad. When colleagues request access to a secure file, a push notification is sent to that document's administrator, allowing for quick and easy authentication.

Finally, Dropbox features improved text previews with editing support for more than 120 file types.

Dropbox is a free 206.2MB download from the iOS App Store.
