Apple has secured content for Apple Podcast Subscriptions from Wondery, in a deal with the Amazon-owned podcast studio that will have some of its Wondery+ subscription content available through Apple's platform.
Launched at its "Spring Loaded" event, Apple Subscription Podcasts allows podcast creators to set up monthly and annual subscriptions for shows. Following the launch, Apple has now managed to gain a number of high-profile shows that will be available via the subscription option.
In the deal with Wondery, podcasts offered in the Wondery+ subscription service will be available through Apple Podcast Subscriptions, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The podcasts will be offered ad-free, just as under Wondery+, though ad-supported free versions will also be available for listening.
The Wondery+ pricing will be $4.99 per month, $34.99 per year, when Apple Podcast Subscriptions becomes available to use later in May.
"We're excited to join with Apple on the next chapter of podcasting and are encouraged by the opportunities this subscription offering opens up for the podcast industry as a whole," said Wondery CEO Jen Sargent. "Through this opportunity, we'll be offering our listeners on Apple Podcasts easy access to Wondery+ while bringing them the same immersive listening experience they've grown to know and love."
Apple was said to be considering an acquisition for Wondery in November 2020, with a rumored valuation in the region of $300 million to $400 million. By December, Amazon had acquired Wondery for an undisclosed price.
