Apple Watch Activity Challenge celebrates national parks on Aug. 28

Apple's next Apple Watch Activity Challenge is scheduled to kick off on Aug. 28 and will urge users to work out in celebration of national parks.

Apple typically honors national parks in August and has over the past few years held an Apple Watch Activity Challenge to promote exploration of the great outdoors.

The challenge usually requires completion of a hike, walk, run, or wheelchair workout of a mile or more to earn a special national parks-themed badge. This year's event is no different.

"Let's take a day to appreciate the beauty of national parks all over the world. On August 28, earn this award by recording a hike, walk, run, or wheelchair workout of a mile (1.6K) or more with any app that adds workouts to Health," Apple says, according to 9to5Mac.

In addition to the award, which features a sun rising over mountains and a waterfall spilling into a blue lake, the challenge nets participants animated stickers that can be used in Messages. The badge will appear in the Health app on iOS or the Activity app on watchOS.

Last year, Apple rolled out a slew of awards, activities, donation opportunities and special content to celebrate the 104th anniversary of the U.S. National Park Service. Along with the annual Apple Watch Activity Challenge, the company presented users with App Store and Apple Music content collections, nature shows on Apple TV and an Apple Pay donation drive benefitting the National Park Foundation.
