Not even the math of psychohistory could predict this much silence, as the cast of "Foundation" on Apple TV+ confess they know nothing about a renewal before the season 3 curtain falls.
Apple waited until the last possible moment to announce a renewal with season 3 wrapping up on September 12, 2025. Cast members Lou Llobell and Tomas Lemarquis said they hadn't heard anything about the show's fate. That left the future of one of Apple TV+'s most ambitious science fiction projects in doubt, at least, until midday Thursday.
Llobell, who plays Gaal Dornick, gave the most candid response. "I wish I had more news for you," she told TechRadar. "When I know, hopefully you will, too."
Lemarquis, who portrays Magnifico Giganticus, was more blunt. Asked directly if he'd heard anything about season 4, he answered simply, "No."
Their comments follow earlier remarks from both Llobell and Jared Harris in June 2025, just before the debut of season 3. At that time, they admitted they also had no information about a renewal.
For a production of this size, that level of secrecy isn't unusual, but it has fueled speculation that Apple is hesitating. That speculation fell flat, as Apple did finally reveal a season 4 renewal hours before the season 3 finale.
Conflicting signals
Back in February 2025, reports claimed that season 4 had been greenlit internally with a new showrunner. That leak raised hopes among fans that the sprawling space opera would continue.
Yet Apple had stayed quiet ever since. The company's streaming division is notoriously tight-lipped, preferring to drop renewals with carefully staged announcements. But silence this long suggests either internal debate or behind-the-scenes restructuring.
"Foundation" is far from a cheap production. Its sweeping visuals, location shoots, and large ensemble cast push it into the tier of Apple TV+'s most expensive projects, alongside "See" and "Invasion." A renewal isn't just a creative decision, it's a budgetary one.
Apple TV+, and "Foundation" renewal track record
Apple has made a habit of renewing some of its prestige series quickly while letting others twist in the wind. "Severance," "The Morning Show," and "Ted Lasso" each secured multi-season orders, signaling confidence. "Foundation" hasn't enjoyed that kind of clear commitment.
The show has also had a rocky critical reception. While many praised its visuals and scope, reviews often called out pacing and heavy exposition.
Audience scores have been mixed, though dedicated fans argue the third season found stronger footing. Whether Apple believes that's enough to justify the expense remains unclear, at least for a future season 5.
Apple hasn't followed a consistent playbook when it comes to "Foundation" renewals. Season 1 wrapped on November 19, 2021, but Apple announced a second season weeks earlier on October 7, 2021.
That early commitment suggested confidence in the show's future before viewers even saw the finale. But the pattern flipped with season 2.
Season 2's finale aired on September 15, 2023, and Apple didn't reveal a season 3 renewal until December 5, nearly three months later. That gap showed Apple was willing to wait and see, perhaps gauging performance before signing off on another expensive batch of episodes.
Luckily fans didn't have to wait for the season 4 renewal announcement. It arrived mid day on September 11, just hours before the season 3 finale aired.
Why it matters
For Apple TV+, "Foundation" is an attempt to prove the service can handle epic, cerebral science fiction on the scale of "Game of Thrones" or "The Expanse." Dropping it would raise questions about Apple's willingness to invest in risky adaptations of classic literature.
The series is based on Isaac Asimov's novels, long considered unfilmable due to their sprawling timelines and abstract storytelling. Showrunner David S. Goyer pitched an eight-season plan in 2021. If Apple pulls the plug after three, it will be remembered as another ambitious project cut short.
Apple isn't alone in hesitating on renewals. Streaming economics have shifted in the past two years, with companies like Netflix and Disney axing expensive shows unless they generate subscriber growth. Wall Street demands profitability over prestige.
"Foundation" may eventually fall victim to that trend. Even a high-profile brand like "Star Trek" has seen cuts, with Paramount+ consolidating series and ending others abruptly.
For Apple, which doesn't rely on ads or a massive library, each renewal must be weighed against its potential to attract or keep subscribers.
The bottom line
Studios sometimes order two seasons in advance without making it public. That lets them secure cheaper contracts and later frame a renewal announcement as a show of confidence, often timed right before a premiere.
The eventual reveal of a season 4 was clearly for maximum effect to drum up the drama before the climactic season 3 finale. The show survives, for now, but it is unclear if it can make it through the entire story arc before it meets the axe.
Update September 11, 4:20 p.m.: Apple announced the season 4 renewal just a few hours after this was published. The text was modified slightly to reflect the renewal did happen.
