The iPhone 20 could finally get the long-rumored solid state buttons, in a move that could help make the anniversary iPhone more durable.
The anniversary release of the iPhone 20 is expected to include major design changes on par with the introduction of the iPhone X. This could include a massive revamp of the physical buttons on the side of the smartphone.
According to Weibo leaker Setsuna Digital on Tuesday, Apple has managed to finish the "functional verification" of its solid state button system. The new buttons are now allegedly scheduled to be mass-produced in time to be used on the iPhone 20 in 2027.
The change will affect all buttons on the sides, including the power button, volume rocker, Action button, and Camera Control, which will use a solid-state design.
On a more immediate level, Setsuna Digital also claims that the iPhone 18 will have a simplified button structure in preparation for the changes. The Camera Control will lose the capacitive sensing layer and retain only pressure sensing.
This seemingly shouldn't change how Camera Control fundamentally works, but it may require sensing slight finger pressure rather than capacitive signals.
Setsuna Digital has a reasonable track record when it comes to rumors, with some misses in the past. However, Weibo leakers do have a reputation for aggregating rumors from elsewhere and often regurgitating claims with little in the way of fact-checking.
Why Solid State
The idea of a solid state button is to create a button that detect presses under a level of pressure, without physically moving. Instead of moving, it "confirms" a press using haptic feedback, to fake the feeling to the user of pressing a button.
For companies like Apple, using solid state buttons can significantly increase the lifespan of its products. By leaving out mechanical parts that move, Apple eliminates components that are more likely to break from wear and use over time.
To consumers, there's less chance of breaking the buttons themselves, and therefore fewer costly trips to repair it. However, it will only really be worthwhile to consumers if Apple can make the solid state buttons feel like the mechanical versions.
Apple has been rumored to be working on solid state buttons for quite a few years, with some rumors going back to 2023 and the iPhone 15 Pro. It has also appeared in patents such as for the so-called "Project Bongo" that was allegedly shelved.
There are benefits to solid state that Apple can certainly capitalize on. An anniversary release with many expected design changes could be its best opportunity to introduce them.
