"F1: The Movie" is Apple TV's latest film to be nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture, alongside three other nominations, though it failed to get any nominations for acting and directing.
Apple TV is famously the first streamer to win a Best Picture Oscar, having won in 2022 with "CODA." It was then nominated for Best Picture in 2024 for "Killers of the Flower Moon," and now in 2026 for "F1: The Movie."
In all, "F1" has been nominated in four categories for the 98th Academy Awards:
- Best Picture
- Film Editing
- Sound
- Visual Effects
In each of these categories, its competition includes "Sinners." For Best Picture, it's competing against that plus the critically acclaimed "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme," "One Battle After Another," and more.
The fact that it lacks any nominations for writing, acting, or directing, is not a great sign of its chances at the ceremony on March 15, 2026. That said, "Killers of the Flower Moon" had 10 nominations, including ones for writing and directing, plus two for acting, and it won none.
In 2022, though, "CODA" was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, as well as Best Picture. It won all three.
Alongside its four Oscar nominations for "F1," Apple has also seen its "The Lost Bus" included in the Best Visual Effects category. "Come See Me in the Good Light" has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film.
As well as the prestige that comes with winning an Oscar, there has always been a distinct financial advantage. Before streaming, it would mean extended theatrical runs and significantly increased VHS or DVD sales for many years afterwards.
Apple had tended to go away from theatrical releases. But even on the strength of "CODA" being nominated for an Oscar, it reissued it in movie theaters.
