Apple has launched two new monitors in its Studio Display range. One is a minor update, while the other is better than and replaces the Pro Display XDR.

Apple's week of launches continues with the long-awaited update to the Studio Display, its first since the original in 2022. Alongside a new Studio Display, though, Apple has launched a Studio Display XDR which is a more substantial improvement to the range.

"Apple has led the industry in delivering the world's most advanced displays for pros to do their life's best work," said John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, in a statement, "and today we do that once again with the introduction of the new Studio Display family."

"Studio Display gets even better with a new 12MP Center Stage camera and powerful Thunderbolt 5 connectivity," he continued. "And the Studio Display XDR is a huge leap forward for XDR technology, with a mini-LED backlight, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows like filmmaking, design and print, and 3D animation. It's by far the world's best pro display."

The new base Studio Display model remains a 5K 27-inch model but now comes with:

  • 2 Thunderbolt 5 ports (and an included cable)
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • 600nits brightness
  • 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View
  • Studio-quality three-microphone array
  • 6-speaker sound offering 30% deeper bass than before
  • 2 high-performance tweeters
  • Optional nano-texture glass
  • Studio Display XDR

A much bigger update is the new Studio Display XDR.

The new Studio Display XDR replaces the Pro Display XDR, which also hasn't seen an update since its launch, despite rumors that it would. That was in 2019, and the Pro Display XDR was a 32-inch 6K monitor, which means the replacement is notably smaller and lower resolution.

Alongside the features of the new base model, this version has:

    • 120Hz refresh rate
    • Adaptive Sync
    • 2,000nits brightness
    • 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio
    • P3 and Adobe RGB wide color gamuts

Of these, the 120Hz Adaptive Sync may be the most welcome, as both the previous and new base Studio Displays are 60Hz.

These specifications fit the most recent rumors regarding Apple releasing two new displays.

Apple is pitching the new Studio Display XDR, in part, at medical professionals. The company says the new display introduced DICOM medical imaging presets, and a Medical Imaging Calibrator, meaning it can be used in diagnostic radiology.

This feature requires the Medical Imaging Calibrator to run on a Mac. At present, this is pending FDA approval.

    Pricing and accessories

Pre-orders for the two displays begin on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, for the US and 34 other countries and regions. Shipping begins March 11.
